” I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal…I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character” Martin Luther King.
In public speaking course, I have done a speech about discrimination against African American in the United States. My research had much evidence prove that discrimination exists in the United States, and it affects African American economically. So, I would like to explain the connection between discrimination, and how it can leads to poverty. For example, because of discrimination, African American could face difficulties to find a job. Also, sometimes they could get a job, but with a low wage comparing to the dominant group. The following question was raised by documentary Freakonomic researchers, “can your given name keep you from getting a job?” A study done by Dr. Sendhil Mullainathan professor of economics shows that, if you chose a black name for your kids they will be treated differently. Dr. Mullainathan sent 5000 resumes, half with black name and half with white name and the resume are exactly same. His study shows that black names are 33% less likely to get an interview. As a result, discrimination against blacks exists ,and can lead to poverty.
